Breast Feeding

As a new Dad, obviously you won't be the one breast feeding your new Baby, but some mothers can have some difficulty at first with establishing breast-feeding.    What research has shown - is that success with breastfeeding is influenced by the Dad's attitude to breastfeeding.  The majority of breastfeeding problems can be avoided with good breastfeeding education and we highly recommend watching Rebecca Glover's famous breastfeeding video "Follow Me Mum"

If you have been in a relationship for some time - suddenly finding that you don't have your partner's undivided attention all the time - is quite an adjustment.   It is great if you have been able to discuss these sort of issues before your baby arrives - so that you work out how you both can work together - so that your baby gets the best start to life - which is what I know you want for your baby.   Breastfeeding your baby can be part of that best start.   Becoming involved with your infant - right from the start and developing a loving relationship through spending gentle time getting to know your baby - is also going to help set your baby up for life.   Even though you won't be breastfeeding - you can be supportive towards your partner while she feeds, and then be involved with other aspects of your baby's care - bathing, massaging, "burping" or settling your baby - these are all things Dad can do.   You may think it crazy - but even reading and singing to your newborn baby - are going to help with your baby's brain development - which in turn is going to help with relationship building and school performance later when they grow older.

The earliest weeks and months of your baby's life are crucial for the beliefs that your baby builds - so your involvement here is crucial.   Read our Dad's Role section for more information if this is all new to you.
